FOR REPAIR – while the movement runs strong and keeps accurate time over an approximate 41 hour power reserve period when it is lying on a flat surface, I’ve noticed that when the watch is angled so that the crown is facing up (or relatively up) the seconds hand has a tendency to stop. When the watch is moved from this position the seconds hand will resume moving although I haven’t checked from every conceivable angle. Additionally the original bezel turns too freely and can be popped off with relative ease. The bezel may be missing a tension spring. A skilled watchmaker will have to make the necessary adjustment(s) to tighten it. Given these issues and considering that the movement shows no visible signs of ever having been serviced a complete overhaul is needed. This rarely seen Caravelle Sea Hunter has a glossy black “T-SWISS MADE-T” signed dial that is in lovely but not perfect condition has it shows some age-related wear. The lume on the dial and hands, which remains fully intact and emits a quick-burst glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully. The slightly oxidized snake hands give this watch oodles of character. The white seconds hand shows some chipping. The original black bezel, which presents as near mint with a butterscotch lume pip that complements the dial and patina beautifully, turns too freely. It’s likely missing a tension spring. The all stainless steel case is in excellent condition showing minor wear with no visibly noticeable signs of oxidation. The outer edge of the case back is stamped “WATER RESISTANT AUTOMATIC STAINLESS STEEL CARAVELLE” with “6” stamped along the inner edge. The inside of the case back is stamped “MLB” followed by “665-1, “”CARAVELLE WATCH DIVISION, “”BULOVA WATCH CO” and SWISS. The crystal shows crazing and should be replaced. However, when the watch is angled with the crown up the seconds hand tends to stop. When moved from this position the seconds hand resumes moving although I haven’t checked from every conceivable angle. The quickset date function works flawlessly by manually rolling over a new date and then repeatedly moving the hour hand between the 20.5 and 24 hour marks until the desired date has been reached. After recently winding the “C” signed, non-screwdown crown 39 full revolutions the movement had an impressive power reserve of approximately 41 hours. The crown winds smoothly. Given that the movement has a tendency to stop when angled at certain positions and considering that it shows no signs of ever having been serviced (there are no visible watchmaker service markings on the inside of the case back or on the movement) a complete overhaul is needed. This watch measures approximately 34 mm excluding the crown, approximately 37 mm including the crown and approximately 20 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel, is approximately 8.5 mm. Including the crystal case thickness measures approximately 11 mm. Given that the seconds hand has a tendency to stop when the watch is angled at certain positions, that the bezel turns too freely and pops off with relative ease and considering that the movement shows no visible signs of ever having been serviced, a complete overhaul is needed. As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time. For this watch that time is now. Any servicing costs going forward are your responsibility. And please study the 12 high magnification pictures carefully as they are part of the description and serve as an accurate representation of the condition of this watch.
