Wittnauer Valjoux 72 Stainless Steel Chronograph for Repair or Parts
Let’s start with the elephant in the room. It is a Valjoux 72 movement (marked as such; also with the Wittnauer in-house 13W) but it is missing much of its chronograph parts (they may be beating somewhere in the heart of a Rolex Daytona or Heuer Carrera). The Wittnauer chronograph is in remarkable condition for its age. The dial has a few flaws but it is in great shape overall. The stainless steel case has not been overly polished if at all. The lume is original. With its blue tachymeter scale and colorful dial combination, this Wittnauer has been compared to the Rolex Pre-Daytona ref. Also, there is much speculation as to what Wittnauer model NASA tested for use in the Apollo mission. Many believe that it was a Wittnauer 242T. Others, including myself, find that dial impossible to read and believe that a simple white dial chronograph was used instead, similar to the present chronograph. Overall, it would be an outstanding chronograph if it were for the missing chronograph parts. Case: Stainless steel, unpolished or minimally polished; keeps sharp edges and subtle facets. Crystal: Scratched; rotates freely in the case; it will have to be changed or fixed. Pushers and crown: The chronograph part is missing so the pushers are not connected to anything but they spring back in position as they should. The crown is working properly. Dimensions: Width 35mm w/o crown, 38mm w crown, 18mm lug width, 43mm lug-to-lug, 13mm thick. A few blemishes but in good overall condition for its age. The lume on the numerals is original and in good condition. “Swiss” marking at the bottom of the dial. Valjoux 72 / Wittnauer 13W. The movement ticks as it should and the hands are moving but I have not tested it. All the chronograph parts are missing. The markings on the movement are “Swiss made”, Fab. Suisse, 72, 13W, AXA (import code). Hands: Missing the chronograph second, minute, and hour hands. The regular time hands are all there and original (all in blued steel). Caseback: Interior with perlage finish and with the following markings: 800, 5589038. This watch is for PARTS/REPAIR only.
