FOR REPAIR – the crown cannot be pulled out to set the time or to wind up the movement. As a result the movement does not run. Given this and considering that the movement shows no clear signs of ever having been serviced a complete overhaul is required. This vintage 1974 Caravelle has a matte black dial that under the damaged crystal appears to be in good condition. While there is some dust/debris on the dial’s surface most of the dust/debris/spotting is on the underbelly of the damaged crystal. The lume, which emits a quick-burst glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged to a perfectly matching warm buttermilk hue. The vibrant orange seconds hand has a lively energy to it. The bezel, which rotates bidirectionally with an appropriate amount of tension, is in decent condition as is the black insert. The heavy duty all stainless steel case shows moderate wear with no visible signs of oxidation. The outer edge of the case back is stamped “CARAVELLE SHOCK RESISTANT WATER-RESISTANT TO 666 FEET STAINLESS STEEL ANTI MAGNETIC” with “N 4″ stamped along the inner edge. The inside of the case back is stamped “3286-DP” followed by “CARAVELLE DIV, “B W. The crystal needs to be replaced. The 17 jewels unadjusted Swiss “II DP” and “N 4″ stamped manual wind movement is clean with the exception of a partially rusted screw but the movement does not run as the “C” signed crown cannot be wound or pulled out to set the time. Given that the movement does not run and considering that it shows no clear signs of ever having been serviced (there are no visible watchmaker service markings on the inside of the case back or on the movement) a complete overhaul is required. This watch measures approximately 36 mm excluding the crown, approximately 39 mm including the crown and approximately 19 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel, is approximately 9 mm. Including the crystal case thickness measures approximately 10.5 mm. Given that the movement does not run and considering that it shows no clear signs of ever having been serviced, a complete overhaul is required. As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time. For this watch that time is now. Any servicing costs going forward are your responsibility.
