Vintage Arnex Divers Chronograph withChocolate Brown Dial, Runs FOR PARTS/REPAIR
While the movement runs strong and keeps accurate time over an approximate 41 hour power reserve period, none of the chronograph functions work (pushers don’t engage so the start/stop/reset function does not work – sweep seconds hand and minute counter hand don’t move). Given this and considering that the movement has likely never been serviced, a complete overhaul is needed. This vintage Arnex broad arrow chronograph, which is seldom seen in this particular dial design and hands configuration, appears to be in untouched condition. The “T SWISS MADE T” signed dial has aged from an originally black color to a uniform chocolate brown hue. The first picture shown was taken under cloudy, natural lighting conditions whereas pictures two through seven were taken on flash to give a more accurate representation of the dial color. But, and in my humble opinion, when bright light is shined on the dial the brown is much more prominent than what the pictures show, appearing to be more of a milk chocolate hue. It is a truly special. The tritium on the dial and hands, which remains fully intact and emits a quick-burst glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged to a perfectly matching warm golden buttermilk patina. The black bezel, which rotates bidirectionally with the appropriate amount of tension, presents much better in person than in the pictures. The all stainless steel case is in wonderful condition showing minor wear, no visibly noticeable dents or dings and has nearly visually imperceptible signs of oxidation. The outer edge of the case back is stamped WATERRESISTANT TESTED 20 ATMOSPHERES INCABLOC SWISS MADE ANTIMAGNETIC ALL STAINLESS STEEL. The crystal shows scratching. While I normally takes pictures of the movements of watches that I put up for sale, the case back on this one is torqued too tight for me to remove. It’s possible that the case back has never been removed. Based on several of the same reference that I’ve owned in the past the movement is likely a 17 jewels Valjoux 7733 manual wind. After recently winding the sharply threaded, non-screwdown crown 47 full revolutions (phenomenal for a manual wind) the movement kept accurate time over an approximate power reserve period of 41 hours. However, none of the chronograph functions work (pushers don’t engage so the start/stop/reset function does not work – sweep seconds hand and minute counter hand don’t move). Given that none of the chronograph functions work and considering that the movement has likely never been serviced, a complete overhaul is needed. This watch measures approximately 38 mm excluding the crown, approximately 41 mm including the crown and approximately 19 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel, is approximately 11 mm. Including the crystal thickness measures approximately 13 mm. Although the movement runs strong and keeps accurate time, none of the chronograph functions work. Given this and considering that the movement has likely never been serviced a complete overhaul is needed. As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old-school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time. For this watch that time is now. Any servicing costs going forward are your responsibility. And please study the 12 high magnification pictures carefully, which were taken in natural light and from various angles, as they are part of the description and serve as an accurate representation of the condition of this watch.
