This vintage 1970’s Lord Nelson Datomatic has a lovely matte black “SWISS MOVT HONG KONG MADE DIAL” signed dial and the original lume, which remains fully intact and emits a quick burst glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully. The fat font bezel, which shows wear and rotates smoothly bidirectionally, presents nicely. The chrome-plated case shows honest wear with minor brassing. The outer edge of the case back is stamped “5 ATM TESTED – BASE METAL BEZEL – STAINLESS STEEL BACK” with “HONG KONG CASE MANUFACTURED BY HUNG KEE METAL” stamped on the inside of the case back. The crystal shows scratching. The Swiss 1 jewel unadjusted “CONSTRUCTA WATCH LTD” manual wind movement is clean but runs fast. Although the red date wheels rolls over as it should there is no quickset option. However, while the non-screwdown crown winds with an appropriate amount of tension it will unscrew (picture 16) when trying to set the date and time. At a minimum a complete overhaul is required. There is a chip in the base of the bezel that can be mostly clearly seen in pictures 12 and 13. This seldom seen vintage 1960/70’s Choisi Continental’The Florida Frogman’ diver came from the Florida estate of a retired Navy SEAL commander. Having never seen another like it, and not knowing its history, I don’t know how this watch came to be. Under the heavily scratched crysta l is a lovely black “SWISS MADE” signed dial. Majority of the imperfections seen are on the crystal. The original lume, which remains fully intact and emits a quick burst glow on only the dial after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully. The black countdown bezel, which shows wear and a chip in its base that can be most clearly seen in pictures 12 and 13, rotates stiffly bidirectionally. The all stainless steel case shows honest wear and oxidation. The outer edge of the case back is stamped “ALL STAINLESS – STEEL – ANTIMAGNETIC” with “100%” followed by “WATERPROOF TESTED” and “20 ATMOSPHERES” stamped in the center. The inside of the case back is stamped “CONTINENTAL” followed by “TIME” and FRANCE. The crystal should be replaced. FOR PARTS/REPAIR – Up until recently the manual wind movement lost about 2 minutes by the end of its approximate 38 hour power reserve period. However, after recently testing the watch again it ran for only about 10 minutes before stopping, fully wound. Despite being fully wound if clockwise pressure is momentarily applied to the crown the seconds hand will resume running for several seconds to several minutes or longer. If constant clockwise pressure is applied to the crown it appears that the seconds hand will run continuously, unwinding the mainspring. The dial moves and vacillates when the crown is pulled out, pushed back in and when the time is being set. Given the issues mentioned a complete overhaul is required. This vintage 1970’s Cardinal Rallye GT world time diver has a glossy black “SWISS MADE” signed dial that is in poor condition. The original lume, which remains fully intact and emits a faint, short-lived glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully to a warm buttermilk hue. Both bezels, which show wear, rotate bidirectionally with an appropriate amount of tension. The chrome-plated case shows considerable wear and brassing. The outer edge of the case back is stamped WATERPROOF SWISS MADE STAINLESS STEEL BACK 200 VACUUM TESTED. The crystal needs to be replaced. While I normally shows pictures of the movements of watches I put up for sale the case back on this watch is torqued too tight for me to remove. FOR PARTS/REPAIR – While the day and date wheels roll over automatically as they should and the movement runs strong with a healthy power reserve of approximately 37 hours, it does run nearly 5 minutes fast per hour. Given this and considering that the movement shows no clear signs of ever having been serviced a compete overhaul is required. This seldom seen vintage 1970’s Elgin day-date diver is an example of a watch that in my humble opinion looks markedly better in person. It has a matte black “T Swiss Made T” signed dial that is in lovely but not perfect condition as it shows difficult to see light wear. The original tritium on the dial, which is fully intact and emits a faint, short-lived glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully to a golden buttermilk hue. The original tritium on the hands no longer glows and has aged a shade darker than the dial markers. This subtle contrast in patina between the dial and hands looks great. The vibrant orange seconds hand complements the dial beautifully. The silver/gray bezel, which shows wear and rotates bidirectionally, presents nicely. The all stainless steel case, which still retains its original brushed satin finish, shows honest wear and is free of oxidation. The outside of the case back is stamped “ELGIN” and “ALL STAINLESS STEEL SWISS” while the inside of the case back is stamped “ELGIN SWITZERLAND” followed by “M 280 Y” and 909 – 5004. The crystal should be replaced. The 17 jewels unadjusted Swiss “ELGIN” stamped FHF 909 automatic movement with quickset day and date functions is clean and runs strong, albeit fast. After winding the original non-screwdown “E” crown 30 full revolutions the movement ran nearly 5 minutes fast per hour over a healthy power reserve period of approximately 37 hours. Given that this watch is more than 45 years old, that the movement runs fast and considering its unknown service history (there are no visible watchmaker service markings on the inside of the case back or movement), a complete overhaul is required. This watch measures approximately 39 mm including the crown and approximately 19 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel, is approximately 10 mm. Including the crystal case thickness measures approximately 11 mm.
