FOR PARTS/REPAIR – Although the automatic movement runs strong it loses about 3 minutes by the end of its approximate 40 hour power reserve period. Additionally, although both the day and date wheels roll over the day wheel does not align correctly. This can be clearly seen in pictures 1 through 8. And while the replacement crown winds smoothly it turns very stiffly when setting the date and time. For these reasons a complete overhaul is required. This seldom seen vintage 1977 Bulova, which came from the estate of its original owner, is in my humble opinion an example of a watch that looks markedly better in person. The “T SWISS T” signed dial, which I believe began life blue, has begun to turn brown, likely due to a defect with the paint. It is in lovely but not perfect condition as it shows wear. The lume, which no longer glows after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully. The paint on the hands shows chipping. The all stainless steel case shows wear with signs of oxidation. The outer edge of the case back is stamped “BULOVA STAINLESS STEEL WATER RESISTANT” with “N7″ and “T334645″ stamped in the center. The crystal shows scratching and dust/debris on its underbelly. While I normally show pictures of the movements of watches I put up for sale the case back on this watch is torqued too tight for me to remove. Although the automatic movement with semi-quickset date function runs strong, albeit slow, and both the day and date wheels roll over automatically on their own, the day wheel does not align correctly. The semi-quickset date function works by manually rolling over a new date and then moving the hour hand repeatedly between the 21 and 24 hour marks until the desired date has been reached. And while the replacement, non-screwdown crown winds smoothly it turns very stiffly when setting the date and time. After winding the crown 39 full revolutions the movement lost about 3 minutes by the end of its approximate 40 hour power reserve period. Given the issues mentioned and considering the movement’s unknown service history a complete overhaul is required. This watch measures approximately 35 mm excluding the crown, approximately 37 mm including the crown and approximately 19 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the mid-case, is approximately 8 mm. Including the crystal thickness measures approximately 10.5 mm. A complete overhaul is required. As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time. For this watch that time is now. Any servicing costs going forward are your responsibility. And please study the 13 high magnification pictures carefully, which were taken in natural light and from various angles, as they are part of the description and serve as an accurate representation of the condition of this watch.

The case and Bezel are in very good condition, the bezel spins smoothly in both direction. The Chrono buttons are in good working condition. The snap back cover is missing. The movement is complete except the Chrono top part that’s needed for hand reset. The balance wheel is moving freely. The movement would need a cleaning. The crystal has a crack, I’m including it for size and shape reference, also comes with its tension ring. The crown is included and fully functional. Please refer to photos for condition.

FOR PARTS/REPAIR – Although the Baumgartner 158 automatic movement runs strong over the course of its approximate 41 hour power reserve period it loses several minutes. After winding the crown it’s necessary to gently spin the watch several times face down on a soft, flat surface in order to jump-start the seconds hand otherwise the movement won’t fire up. Additionally the bezel does not seat and will require manipulation to work properly. A complete overhaul is required. This vintage 1960/70’s Rene Rochard has black “SWISS MADE T” signed dial that is in lovely but not perfect condition as it shows age-related wear and chipping along the edge at 1 o’clock. The lume, which remains fully intact, emits a quick burst glow after being exposed to bright light. The bezel, which shows wear, does not seat. It will require manipulation by a skilled watchmaker to work properly. The massive, beautifully cut chrome-plated case shows honest wear. The outer edge of the case back is stamped “STAINLESS STEEL BACK BASE METAL BEZEL SWISS MADE” with “8544 – 2529″ stamped in the center. The inside of the case back is stamped “BADER LTD” followed by CASE SWISS MADE. The crystal shows scratching and significant dust/debris on its underbelly. The 1 jewel Swiss BADER LTD. ” and “BREVETS stamped Baumgartner 158 automatic movement runs strong, albeit slow, only after the crown has been wound and the watch then spun face down several times on a soft, flat surface. Otherwise the seconds hand won’t fire up. This movement does not have a quickset date function. After recently winding the non-screwdown crown 39 full revolutions (and then spinning the watch face down several times) the movement ran several minutes slow by the end of its approximate 41 hour power reserve period. Given that the movement runs slow, needs a jump-start and considering its unknown service history (there are no visible watchmaker service markings on the inside of the case back or on the movement) a complete overhaul is required. This watch measures approximately 40 mm excluding the crown, approximately 44 mm including the crown and approximately 19.5 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the mid-case is approximately 8 mm. Including the crystal thickness measures approximately 11 mm. Given that the movement needs a jump-start, runs slow and the bezel does not seat a complete overhaul is required. As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old-school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time. For this watch that time is now. Mechanical Condition & Movement Breakdown. Please review the precise functional breakdown below. The Automatic Movement (RUNNING): The internal automatic movement remains active and responsive. When the watch case is gently moved or given a light shake to engage the internal weighted rotor, the center sweep second hand springs to life and begins running with a smooth, sweeping motion across the dial. The Winding Stem & Crown Core (Stem Intact): The outer gold decorative shell of the winding crown has come off. However, the winding stem itself is not broken or sheared flush. Upon close inspection of the crown tube area, the original stem is fully intact, and the inner steel core/sleeve of the original crown is still securely screwed onto the end of it. This is excellent news for restoration, as a watchmaker will simply need to unscrew the leftover inner core to mount a new crown. Consequently, the time-setting functionality, manual winding capacity, overall power reserve duration, and daily timekeeping accuracy remain completely untested. Condition, Flaw, & Patina Documentation. The Dial, Hands, and Indices. Patina & Aging: The dial face displays genuine, unmolested estate patina. There is visible spotting, micro-spotting, and uniform amber tarnish heavily concentrated along the absolute outer perimeter of the dial surface, right where it meets the inner bezel track. Handset Spotting: The original gold-toned dauphine hour and minute hands, along with the ultra-thin center sweep seconds hand, show distinct signs of vintage tarnish and oxidation. There is prominent spotting running down the spine and edges of both the hour and minute hands, and the seconds hand exhibits distinct spotting along its entire length. The Case, Lugs, and Crystal. It features a comprehensive network of fine hairline surface scratches across the central viewing area. More critically, there are prominent, deep stress cracks, fractures, and edge-splits heavily visible along the 6 o’clock and 9 o’clock profile view regions. “Beefy Lug” Case Construction: The case features a heavy gold-capped/gold-top shell over a solid stainless steel body. The gold layer is notably thick (typical of premium mid-century Seamasters) and has not been worn down to the base metal on the high edges. The lugs remain straight, thick, and physically unmarred by aggressive polishing wheels. Normal micro-scratches and minor surface pocket-pitting from years of wear are visible under magnification. Under-Case Grime & Verdigris: True to its untouched estate nature, the recesses of the case, the lug wells, and the area immediately surrounding the crown tube harbor a heavy amount of accumulated vintage dirt, skin residue, and green copper-carbonate oxidation (verdigris). This has been left completely uncleaned to prove the raw, unmanipulated state of the watch. Case Back: The watch features its original solid stainless steel screw-down case back. Centered on the back is the iconic, raised Omega Seahorse (Hippocampus) emblem, which remains crisp, sharp, and highly defined, showing minimal wear from clothing friction. The Vintage Speidel “Calendar” Expansion Band. This watch comes outfitted on a highly collectible, period-correct Speidel Twist-O-Flex expansion bracelet stamped with Patent Number 2,689,450 and marked “Stainless Steel” on the inner link plates. This is the highly unusual variant featuring a built-in mechanical metal framework designed to hold a miniature paper calendar insert. DEFECT – Non-Functioning Calendar Module: The calendar module at the top of the band features two small external adjustment wheels/knobs on the sides. This internal calendar mechanism is non-working. The side knobs do not properly turn or advance the internal display apparatus, and the mechanism appears frozen or disconnected due to age. DEFECT – Twisted Profile & Link Separation: The expansion band shows significant physical wear from decades of daily use. The overall profile of the bracelet has a distinct cosmetic twist/warp when resting. Furthermore, several individual inner expansion links have begun to lose their spring tension and are actively separating and gapping, revealing visible spaces between the metal segments. DEFECT – Damaged Endlink Shroud: The gold-toned decorative metal cover/shroud on the upper endlink (where the band connects to the watch lug) is completely split, torn, and peeled open. This structural split fully exposes the underlying inner mechanical tube and the vintage spring bar inside the lug well. The bracelet links and underside also show heavy dark tarnish, grime, and wear throughout. This watch is a project piece due to the incomplete crown setup and untested functions, despite the fact that the gear train still ticks and sweeps when handled.
