FOR PARTS/REPAIR – Although the day, date and time can be set and the crown can be smoothly wound the seconds hand won’t fire up. A complete overhaul is required. This seldom seen vintage 1971 Caravelle, which came from the estate of its original owner, has a pristine blue “T SWISS T” signed dial and the original lume, which remains fully intact and no longer glows after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully to a toasted buttermilk hue. The vibrant orange seconds hand shows no paint loss. The fixed, fluted bezel presents nicely. The all stainless steel case shows honest wear with insignificant signs of oxidation. The outer edge of the case back is stamped “CARAVELLE – SHOCK RESISTANT – STAINLESS STEEL – AUTOMATIC – ANTI MAGNETIC – WATER RESISTANT” with “N1″ stamped along the inner edge. The inside of the case back is stamped “MXF” followed by “824, “”CARAVELLE WATCH DIVISION, “”BULOVA WATCH Co” and SWISS. The crystal needs to be replaced. The 17 jewels unadjusted Swiss “CARAVELLE WATCH” and “N1″ stamped AS 1916 automatic movement with semi-quickset date function does not run. Lthough the day, date and time can be set and the crown can be smoothly wound the seconds hand won’t fire up. The primary quickset date function, which should work by pushing in on the crown, does not. However, a secondary semi-quickset date function works by manually rolling over a new date and then moving the hour hand repeatedly between the 20.5 and 24 hour marks until the desired date has been reached. The signed, non-screwdown crown winds smoothly. Given that the movement does not run at a minimum. This watch measures approximately 36 mm excluding the crown, approximately 39 mm including the crown and approximately 20 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the fluted bezel, is approximately 9 mm. Including the crystal thickness measures approximately 10.5 mm. Given that the movement does not run and considering its unknown service history a complete overhaul is required. As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old-school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time. For this watch that time is now. At a minimum a complete overhaul is required. This vintage 1975 Bulova Caravelle diver has under the heavily scratched/gouged crystal a lovely black “T” signed and the original lume, which remains fully intact and emits a faint, short-lived glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged to a perfectly matching warm buttermilk hue. The vibrant orange seconds hand, which shows no chipping or signs of paint loss, adds oodles of character. Although the bezel rotates bidirectionally with an appropriate amount of tension the bezel insert is missing. The all stainless steel case shows honest wear with minor signs of oxidation. The outer edge of the case back is stamped “CARAVELLE SHOCK RESISTANT WATER-RESISTANT TO 666 FEET STAINLESS STEEL ANTI MAGNETIC” with “N5″ stamped along the inner edge. The inside of the case back is stamped “3286-DP” followed by “CARAVELLE DIV, “B. ” and “TAIWAN The crystal shows heavy scratching/gouging. The 17 jewels unadjusted “N5″ and “IIDP” stamped manual wind movement runs strong, albeit slow. The bezel spins freely with no friction and it’s loose. The hands appear to be early replacements. This vintage 1966 Caravelle diver has a matte black “T JAPAN T” signed dial that is in lovely but not perfect condition as it shows wear. The lume, which remains fully intact and emits a faint, short-lived glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully to a perfectly matching golden buttermilk hue. The black bezel, which shows considerable wear, rotates freely bidirectionally with no friction and it’s loose. I have not removed it so I’m unsure whether it simply needs a tension spring or if it needs to be repaired/replaced… The all stainless steel case shows honest wear with visibly insignificant signs of oxidation. The inside of the case back is stamped 637. The crystal should be replaced. The 17 jewels unadjusted Japan “CARAVELLE WATCH, “”IIDP” and “M7″ stamped manual wind movement runs strong, albeit fast. Given this and considering that the movement shows no clear signs of ever having been serviced a complete overhaul is long overdue and required. This seldom seen vintage 1974 Caravelle has a matte off-white “T-WEST GERMANY-T” signed dial that is in lovely but not perfect condition as it has some edge wear. The lume, which remains fully intact and no longer glows after being exposed to bright light, has aged to buttermilk hue on the hands and to a richer golden buttermilk hue on the dial. In my humble opinion the contrast in patina presents beautifully. The chrome-plated case, which appears to have retained its original finish, shows honest wear and brassing. The outer edge of the case back is stamped “SELF WINDING BASE METAL BEZEL STAINLESS STEEL BACK WATER RESISTANT” with “N4″ stamped in the center along with the personalized inscriptions T. The crystal shows scratching. The quickset date function works flawlessly by manually rolling over a new date and then moving the hour hand repeatedly between the 19.5 and 24 hour marks until the desired date has been reached. After recently winding the original, non-screwdown “C” stamped crown 39 full revolutions the movement had gained more than two hours by the end of its approximate 41 hour power reserve period. The crown winds smoothly. Given that the movement runs a significantly fast and considering that it has likely never been serviced (there are no visible watchmaker service markings on the inside of the case back or on the movement) a complete overhaul is long overdue and required. This watch measures approximately 35 mm excluding the crown, approximately 37.5 mm including the crown and approximately 18 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the fixed bezel, is approximately 8 mm. Including the crystal case thickness measures approximately 10 mm. Given that the movement runs significantly fast and considering that it has likely never been serviced a complete overhaul is required.
