FOR PARTS/REPAIR – Prior to the replacement crown recently unscrewing the movement had been running strong and keeping accurate time over an approximate 40 hour power reserve period. When I recently went to use the semi-quickset date function to scroll through nearly an entire month the crown unscrewed. It can be screwed back down and the time can be forward set but when the crown is turned counterclockwise (hands moved backwards) it unscrews. And when winding the crown it sounds like crunching lettuce. Rather than winding the crown to generate a power reserve if the watch is gently spun face down on a soft, flat surface the movement fires up immediately. The more it’s spun the longer it will run. Given that the crown unscrews and doesn’t wind as it should and considering the movement’s unknown service history a complete overhaul is needed. This vintage 1970’s Zodiac Sea Wolf has an originally black SWISS T. While I normally show pictures of the movements of watches I put up for sale I don’t feel comfortable removing the case back on this watch. The case back on Sea Wolf’s are notoriously difficult to remove and should be done by a skilled watchmaker familiar with how to do so in order to avoid causing damage. While the time can be set without issue and the replacement crown winds smoothly, the movement has a relatively short power reserve of approximately 13 hours. Given the short power reserve and considering the movement’s unknown service history a complete overhaul is recommended. This vintage Zodiac Sea Wolf has an originally white “SWISS” only signed dial that is in near pristine condition having aged uniquely over time to a truly special toasted almond hue. In my humble opinion it couldn’t be more pleasing and presents beautifully in person. The significant crazing seen in the pictures is on the crystal, not the dial. The dial does not show any visibly noticeable scratching. If the pictures are carefully examined it’ll be noticed that the crazing moves positions from pic to pic. The original lume on the dial and hands, which remains fully intact and no longer glows after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully. The bezel , which smoothly rotates bidirectionally, has worn down naturally in a way that complements the dial and patina nicely. The all stainless steel case shows honest wear and minor oxidation. The outside of the case back is stamped “ZODIAC SEAWOLF WATER-TESTED 20 ATM ESPECIALLY” and between the lugs at 6 o’clock are the stamped numbers 1388809. The crystal should be replaced as it shows significant crazing. The case back on Sea Wolf’s are notoriously difficult to remove and should be done by a skilled watchmaker familiar with how to do so in order to avoid causing damage. After recently winding the sharply threaded, non-screwdown replacement crown 39 full revolutions on several occasions over multiple power reserve periods the movement fired up immediately each time and kept accurate time over an average of approximately 13 hours. Given the short power reserve, which indicates that a service is needed, and considering the movement’s unknown service history, a complete overhaul is recommended. This watch measures approximately 35 mm excluding the crown, approximately 37 mm including the replacement crown and approximately 17.75 mm between the lugs. Super rare Zodiac Sea Wolf first signed model steel watch case reference 699 from the 1950s. The case back screws on perfectly and is an impossible part to find if you have other parts for a 699 reference Zodiac SeaWolf build-up or repair project. The only earlier model is the 691 that was not signed Sea Wolf. The 691 and 699 models both had this unusual screw-back case format and a different movement from later Zodiac Sea Wolf watches you commonly see from the 1960s. The top right lug was repaired badly and is still deformed but could probably be repaired nicely with today’s laser case repair technology. FOR PARTS/REPAIR – The crown cannot be pulled out to set the date and time and when it is turned counterclockwise it unscrews. Additionally the movement does not run. Because no pictures of the movement will be provided assume that it’s missing. A complete restoration/overhaul will be required. This vintage Zodiac Sea Wolf has a glossy black SWISS T. The case back on Sea Wolf’s are notoriously difficult to remove and should be done by a skilled watchmaker familiar with how to do so in order to avoid causing damage. The Zodiac signed, non-screwdown crown cannot be pulled out to set the date and time and it unscrews when its turned counterclockwise.
