While the time can be set without issue and the replacement crown winds smoothly, the movement has a relatively short power reserve of approximately 13 hours. Given the short power reserve and considering the movement’s unknown service history a complete overhaul is recommended. This vintage Zodiac Sea Wolf has an originally white “SWISS” only signed dial that is in near pristine condition having aged uniquely over time to a truly special toasted almond hue. In my humble opinion it couldn’t be more pleasing and presents beautifully in person. The significant crazing seen in the pictures is on the crystal, not the dial. The dial does not show any visibly noticeable scratching. If the pictures are carefully examined it’ll be noticed that the crazing moves positions from pic to pic. The original lume on the dial and hands, which remains fully intact and no longer glows after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully. The bezel , which smoothly rotates bidirectionally, has worn down naturally in a way that complements the dial and patina nicely. The all stainless steel case shows honest wear and minor oxidation. The outside of the case back is stamped “ZODIAC SEAWOLF WATER-TESTED 20 ATM ESPECIALLY” and between the lugs at 6 o’clock are the stamped numbers 1388809. The crystal should be replaced as it shows significant crazing. The case back on Sea Wolf’s are notoriously difficult to remove and should be done by a skilled watchmaker familiar with how to do so in order to avoid causing damage. After recently winding the sharply threaded, non-screwdown replacement crown 39 full revolutions on several occasions over multiple power reserve periods the movement fired up immediately each time and kept accurate time over an average of approximately 13 hours. Given the short power reserve, which indicates that a service is needed, and considering the movement’s unknown service history, a complete overhaul is recommended. This watch measures approximately 35 mm excluding the crown, approximately 37 mm including the replacement crown and approximately 17.75 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel is approximately 7 mm. Including the crystal case thickness measures approximately 10 mm. Given the relatively short power reserve period and considering the movement’s unknown service history a complete overhaul is recommended. As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old-school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time. For this watch that time is now. Any servicing costs going forward are your responsibility. No pictures of the movement will be provided, so assume there is no movement. A complete restoration/overhaul will be required.
