FOR PARTS/REPAIR – The automatic movement does not run. While the crown/stem is intact when the crown is pulled out and pushed back in as well as when the time is set the dial moves which has caused chipping around its edges. Both the day and date wheels roll over as they should. At a minimum a complete overhaul is required. This seldom seen vintage 1973 Bulova has a “-T SWISS T-” signed dial that shows wear, most notably chipping around the edges as it moves when the crown is pulled out and pushed back in as well as when the time is set. The lume, which is fully intact with the exception of the minute hand, emits a quick burst glow on only the dial after being exposed to bright light. The black bezel, which shows wear and rotates. Bidirectionally, presents nicely with the toasted butterscotch inverted lume triangle complementing the dial and patina beautifully. The all stainless steel case shows honest wear with minor signs of oxidation. The outer edge of the case back is stamped “BULOVA STAINLESS STEEL 666 FEET” with “448844” and “N3″ stamped in the center. The inside of the case back is stamped “R/” followed by “7515” and SWISS. The crystal needs to be replaced. The 23 jewels unadjusted Swiss “BULOVA WATCH Co” and “11 AOACB” stamped automatic movement does not run. The quickset date function, which should work by pulling the crown out and pushing it back in, does not. And when the signed crown is flush with the case (first position) it turns the hands rather than allowing the movement to be wound. This watch measures approximately 37 mm excluding the crown, approximately 40.5 mm including the crown and approximately 19 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel, is approximately 9 mm. Including the crystal thickness measures approximately 10.5 mm. As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time. For this watch that time is now. FOR PARTS/REPAIR – Although the movement runs strong it does run significantly fast, gaining more than two hours by the end of its approximate 41 hour power reserve period. Given this and considering that the movement shows no clear signs of ever having been serviced a complete overhaul is long overdue and required. This seldom seen vintage 1974 Caravelle has a matte off-white “T-WEST GERMANY-T” signed dial that is in lovely but not perfect condition as it has some edge wear. The lume, which remains fully intact and no longer glows after being exposed to bright light, has aged to buttermilk hue on the hands and to a richer golden buttermilk hue on the dial. In my humble opinion the contrast in patina presents beautifully. The chrome-plated case, which appears to have retained its original finish, shows honest wear and brassing. The outer edge of the case back is stamped “SELF WINDING BASE METAL BEZEL STAINLESS STEEL BACK WATER RESISTANT” with “N4″ stamped in the center along with the personalized inscriptions T. The crystal shows scratching. The quickset date function works flawlessly by manually rolling over a new date and then moving the hour hand repeatedly between the 19.5 and 24 hour marks until the desired date has been reached. After recently winding the original, non-screwdown “C” stamped crown 39 full revolutions the movement had gained more than two hours by the end of its approximate 41 hour power reserve period. The crown winds smoothly. Given that the movement runs a significantly fast and considering that it has likely never been serviced (there are no visible watchmaker service markings on the inside of the case back or on the movement) a complete overhaul is long overdue and required. This watch measures approximately 35 mm excluding the crown, approximately 37.5 mm including the crown and approximately 18 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the fixed bezel, is approximately 8 mm. Including the crystal case thickness measures approximately 10 mm. Given that the movement runs significantly fast and considering that it has likely never been serviced a complete overhaul is required. The smooth outer part of the dial is silver and the inner concentric part is more of a champagne color. The beautifully cut all stainless steel case shows honest wear with minor signs of oxidation. The outer edge of the case back is stamped “STAINLESS STEEL WATERPROOF INCABLOC ANTIMAGNETIC UNBREAKABLE MAINSPRING” with “MILUS” followed by “Week-Day, “”SWISS MADE, “”21 JEWELS” and 40.63. Stamped in the center. The crystal needs to be replaced. The 21 jewels Swiss “MILUS” stamped Felsa 4018 manual wind movement does not run and the original signed crown/stem separates (pulls out). FOR REPAIR – the crown cannot be pulled out to set the time or to wind up the movement. As a result the movement does not run. Given this and considering that the movement shows no clear signs of ever having been serviced a complete overhaul is required. This vintage 1974 Caravelle has a matte black dial that under the damaged crystal appears to be in good condition. While there is some dust/debris on the dial’s surface most of the dust/debris/spotting is on the underbelly of the damaged crystal. The lume, which emits a quick-burst glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged to a perfectly matching warm buttermilk hue. The vibrant orange seconds hand has a lively energy to it. The bezel, which rotates bidirectionally with an appropriate amount of tension, is in decent condition as is the black insert. The heavy duty all stainless steel case shows moderate wear with no visible signs of oxidation. The outer edge of the case back is stamped “CARAVELLE SHOCK RESISTANT WATER-RESISTANT TO 666 FEET STAINLESS STEEL ANTI MAGNETIC” with “N 4″ stamped along the inner edge. The inside of the case back is stamped “3286-DP” followed by “CARAVELLE DIV, “B W. The crystal needs to be replaced. The 17 jewels unadjusted Swiss “II DP” and “N 4″ stamped manual wind movement is clean with the exception of a partially rusted screw but the movement does not run as the “C” signed crown cannot be wound or pulled out to set the time. FOR REPAIR – The movement runs about 7 minutes fast by the end of its approximate 38 hour power reserve period. And while the time can be set without issue when the crown is wound too quickly it will occasionally sound like crunching lettuce. I’ve noticed that if the crown is wound very slowly this sound is greatly reduced. Given that the movement runs a bit fast and considering the issue with the crown a complete overhaul is needed. This seldom seen vintage Zodiac Sea Skate is an example of a watch that in my humble opinion presents beautifully in person. It has a black “SWISS” only signed dial that shows age-related spotting and the original lume, which remains fully intact and no longer emits a glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully. This reference came with a smooth, fixed bezel. The all stainless steel case shows moderate wear and signs of oxidation. The outside of the case back is stamped “ZODIAC SEAWOLF WATER-TESTED 20 ATM ESPECIALLY” and between the lugs at 6 o’clock are the stamped numbers 1286892. The crystal shows scratching. The case back on Sea Wolf’s are notoriously difficult to remove and should be done by a skilled watchmaker familiar with how to do so in order to avoid causing damage. While the movement runs strong it does run fast. After winding the crown 39 full revolutions the movement was running about 7 minutes fast by the end of its approximate 38 hour power reserve period.
