Additionally the case back gasket has deteriorated and needs to be replaced as does the crystal. This vintage late 1960’s Zodiac Sea Wolf has a pristine glossy black SWISS T. The 17 jewels unadjusted Swiss Zodiac Ltd. ” and “70-72 stamped automatic movement does not run. FOR PARTS/REPAIR – The movement loses a little more than 1.5 hours by the end of its approximate 31 hour power reserve period. Given this and considering that the movement shows no signs of ever having been serviced a complete overhaul is long overdue and required. This seldom seen vintage 1970’s Paul Peugeot diver has a glossy black dial that is in pristine condition, free of any visible scratching, tool marks or defects. The lume, which remains fully intact and emits a faint, short-lived glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged to a deep golden butterscotch on the dial while the hands have developed a slightly lighter patina. The metal hands show corrosion which in my humble opinion adds oodles of character. The black countdown bezel, which shows wear and rotates smoothly bidirectionally, presents nicely. Stainless steel case, which retains its original satin finish, shows minor wear with no visible signs of oxidation. The outer edge of the case back is stamped “SHOCKRESISTANT ANTIMAGNETIC ALL STAINLESS STEEL” with “TESTED TO A DEPTH OF 600 FEET 100% WATERPROOF AND CONDENSATION PROOF” stamped along the inner edge. The inside of the case back is stamped CONDE CO. ” followed by “CASE MADE IN HONGKONG. ” Additionally the case is stamped “HONGKONG between the lugs at 12 o’clock. The crystal shows scratching. The 17 jewels Standard Time (ST) 92 manual wind movement is clean. After recently winding the sharply threaded non-screwdown crown 15 full revolutions the movement ran a little more than 1.5 hours slow by the end of its approximate 31 hour power reserve period. Given that this watch is more than 45 years old, that the movement runs slow and considering that it shows no signs of ever having been serviced (there are no watchmaker service markings on the movement or on the inside of the case back) a complete overhaul is long overdue and required. While the movement runs strong it tends to run anywhere from 45 minutes to more than an hour slow at the end of its approximate 38 hour power reserve period. And while the date wheel rolls over the day wheel does not. Additionally, occasionally after winding the crown several full revolutions there will be a jolt in the movement with the seconds hand stopping. When this happens I’ve observed that if the crown is pulled out, the time reset, the crown pushed back in and then the crown given several additional slow winds, being careful to stop before jolting the movement again, the seconds hand will fire back up without issue. Finally, while the dial appears to be in pristine condition, over time some dust and debris has gotten between the crystal and crystal ring, settling on the underbelly of the crystal and the dial. Most notably being what appears to be a piece of filament lying between the 6 and 7 o’clock markers. A skilled watchmaker can quickly and easily remove this dust/debris during a service. Given the issues noted above a complete overhaul is needed. This classy vintage Sheffield day-date diver has a black concentric “T SWISS MADE A1″ signed dial that is in pristine condition, free of any visibly noticeable scratching, tool marks, chipping or defects. Please note that over time some dust and debris has gotten between the crystal and crystal ring, settling on the underbelly of the crystal and the dial. A skilled watchmaker can quickly and easily remove this. The original lume on the dial and hands, which is fully intact and matches perfectly, emits a faint, short-lived glow after being exposed to bright light. The bezel, which rotates bidirectionally, looks good. The chrome-plated case shows some wear, most notably a ding on the bottom of the left lug at 12 o’clock. The crystal shows scratching. While I normally show the movements of watches I sell, the case back on this one is torqued too tight for me to remove it. A skilled watchmaker will have no issues removing it. While the manual wind movement with quickset date function runs strong it does run slow. And while the date wheel rolls over and day wheel does not. The quickset date function works flawlessly by manually rolling over a new date and then moving the hour hand repeatedly between the 20.5 and 24 hour marks until the desired date has been reached. FOR REPAIR – while the movement starts up immediately when the crown is pulled out to set the date/time and continues to run strong for several hours, keeping accurate time when the watch is moved in a brisk circular motion, the HEV screwdown crown does not generate friction when wound in the first position. Therefore no power reserve is generated by winding the crown. Additionally when moving the watch in a circular motion to generate power it feels as though the oscillating weight may be spinning a bit too freely. This is personal preference and does not affect the movement’s ability to keep time. Considering the movement’s unknown service history a complete overhaul is recommended. This rarely seen vintage Buren dive watch has a pristine gray satin dial that is free of any scratching, tool marks, defects or chipping. The original lume on the dial and hands, which remains fully intact and emits a quick-burst glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged beautifully to a perfectly matching golden buttermilk hue. The slightly faded black bezel, which smoothly rotates bidirectionally, looks good. The heavy duty all stainless steel case is built like a tank and is in wonderful condition, free of any visibly noticeable dents or dings. There appears to be a very light inscription on the back of one of the lugs which in person is visually imperceptible. The outer edge of the case back is stamped “SHOCKRESISTANT ANTIMAGNETIC STAINLESS STEEL CASE BASE METAL INDICATOR” with “TESTED TO A DEPTH OF 600 FEET 100% WATERRESISTANT AND CONDENSATION PROOF” stamped around the inner edge. The inside of the case back is stamped W. ” followed by “CASE MADE IN HONG KONG. While the integrity of the crystal is intact it should be replaced as it is heavily scratched. When unscrewing the approximate 4 mm HEV screwdown crown to the second position to set the date and time, the seconds hand immediately fires up. By moving the watch in a brisk, circular motion the power reserve can be built up for several hours. During this time the movement keeps near perfect time. However, when the crown is pulled out to the first position to wind the movement, there is no friction. Therefore, an adjustment will need to be made by a skilled watchmaker. Additionally it feels as though the oscillating weight moves a bit too freely and may benefit from being tightened. The quickset date function works flawlessly by pulling the crown out to the second position, rolling over a new date and then moving the hour hand repeatedly between the 20.5 and 24 hour marks until the desired date has been reached. Considering the movement’s unknown service history (although there are watchmaker service markings on the inside of the case back it has likely been several decades since the movement was last serviced) a complete overhaul is recommended.
