FOR PARTS/REPAIR – although. The movement runs strong and keeps accurate time over an approximate 37 hour power reserve period the crown/stem separates from the movement (clearly seen in picture 8). While it can be pushed back in and wound without issue the day, date and time cannot be set. Given this and considering the movement’s unknown service history a complete overhaul is required. This seldom seen vintage 1960’s Vulcain Superautomatic has a satin silver “SWISS MADE” signed dial that is in lovely but not perfect condition as it shows age-related wear. The original lume on the dial and hands, which no longer glows after being exposed to bright light, has aged to a buttermilk hue. The heavy-duty all stainless steel case shows honest wear with no visible signs of oxidation. The outer edge of the case back is stamped “ALL STAINLESS STEEL SWISS MADE DUST AND WATERRESISTANT ANTIMAGNETIC INCABLOC” with “AUTOMATIC” followed by “Selfwinding” stamped in the center. The inside of the case back is stamped “ALSTATER WATCH Co” followed by SWISS. The crystal shows light scratching. The 17 jewels unadjusted Swiss “ALSTATER WATCH CO” stamped Felsa 4009 automatic movement is clean, keeps accurate time and both the day and date wheels roll over as they should. However, the crown/stem separates from the movement (clearly seen in picture 8). After winding the sharply threaded non-screwdown crown 39 full revolutions the movement had a solid power reserve of approximately 37 hours. The crown winds smoothly. Given that the crown/stem separates from the movement and considering its unknown service history (there are several watchmaker service markings on the inside of the case back) a complete overhaul is required. This watch measures approximately 36 mm excluding the crown, approximately 37.5 mm including the crown and approximately 19 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the mid-case, is approximately 7 mm. Including the crystal thickness measures approximately 10 mm. Given that the crown/stem separates from the movement and considering its unknown service history a complete overhaul is required. As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old-school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time. For this watch that time is now. Any servicing costs going forward are your responsibility. And please study the 12 high magnification pictures carefully, which were taken in natural light and from various angles, as they are part of the description and serve as an accurate representation of the condition of this watch.
