He Parrenin 60G manual wind movement runs about 2 minutes slow by the end of its approximate 43 hour power reserve period. The time can be set without issue and the non-screwdown crown winds buttery smooth. However, the date wheel does not roll over. Given that the movement runs a bit slow and considering that the date wheel does not roll over a complete overhaul is required. This vintage 1960’s North Star diver, which came from the estate of its original owner who proudly served in the Commandos Marine (French Navy’s special operation forces) from the mid 1960’s to the mid 1970’s, has a near pristine glossy black “FRANCE” only signed dial. The lume on both the dial and hands, which remains fully intact and emits a faint, short-lived glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully to a warm buttermilk hue. The faded black bezel, which shows wear and does not rotate likely due to gunk buildup underneath, presents nicely. The all stainless steel case shows honest wear with no visible signs of oxidation. The outer edge of the case back is stamped “WATERPROOF – ANTIMAGNETIC – ALL STAINLESS STEEL” with “100% WATERPROOF” followed by “TESTED 20 ATMOSPHERES” and “521681” stamped in the center. The inside of the case back is stamped E. GLUCK TRADING Co” followed by “FRANCE. The crystal should be replaced. The 17 jewels unadjusted France E. This watch measures approximately 38 mm excluding the crown, approximately 40.5 mm including the crown and approximately 18.5 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel, is approximately 9 mm. Including the crystal thickness measures approximately 11.5 mm. The lug to lug distance measures approximately 45 mm. A complete overhaul is required. As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old-school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time. For this watch that time is now. Any servicing costs going forward are your responsibility. The metal hands show oxidation. The faded black bezel, which shows wear and rotates stiffly bidirectionally, presents nicely. The all stainless steel case shows honest wear with minor signs of oxidation.
