Although the AS 1914 manual wind movement keeps accurate time over an approximate 40 hour power reserve period and both the day and date wheels roll over as they should the crown is on unevenly. Although the crown/stem connection is solid occasionally the stem doesn’t want to engage the hands to set the time. When this happens I’ll push the crown in, pull it back out and then turn it again. Or I’ll simply continue to turn the crown until the stem reengages the hands. While the crown winds without issue it turns a bit rough when setting the time. Given the crown/stem issue and considering the movement’s unknown service history a complete overhaul is required. This seldom seen vintage 1970’s Helbros diver, which came from the estate of its original owner, has a satin blue “SWISS” only signed dial that shows age-related wear and the original lume, which emits a quick burst glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully. The faded bezel, which shows wear and rotates bidirectionally with an appropriate amount of tension, presents nicely. The all stainless steel lugholes case shows honest wear with insignificant signs of oxidation. The outside of the case back is stamped “ALL STAINLESS STEEL WEST GERMANY” with the inside of the case back being stamped HELBROS WATCHES. The crystal needs to be replaced. The 17 jewels unadjusted Swiss “ELGIN 338″ stamped AS 1914 manual wind movement with quickset date function keeps accurate time and both the day and date wheels roll over as they should. The quickset date function usually works consistently by pressing in on the crown. Occasionally it won’t so I’ll manually roll over a new day/date and then try the quickset function again. This tends to work out the kinks. After recently winding the non-screwdown crown 33 full revolutions the movement had an approximate 40 power reserve period. However, as seen in several of the pictures the crown is on unevenly. He crown winds without issue it turns a bit rough when setting the time. Given this issue and considering the movement’s unknown service history a complete overhaul is required. This watch measures approximately 37 mm excluding the crown, approximately 40.5 mm including the crown and approximately 19 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel, is approximately 10.5 mm. Including the crystal thickness measures approximately 11.5 mm. A complete overhaul is required. As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old-school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time. For this watch that time is now. Any servicing costs going forward are your responsibility. And please study the 22 high magnification pictures carefully as they are part of the description and serve as an accurate representation of the condition of this watch.

Given this and considering the movement’s unknown service history a complete overhaul is required. This seldom seen vintage 1970’s Helbros day-date diver has a “GERMANY” signed dial that has aged naturally and uniquely over time to a bluish tan hue. In my humble opinion it has oodles of character and presents markedly better in person. The original lume on the dial and hands, which remains fully intact and emits a quick-burst glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully. The bezel, which rotates a bit stiffly bidirectionally, shows considerable wear. The all stainless steel lugholes case, which appears to have retained its original finish, shows honest wear with insignificant signs of oxidation. The outside of the case back is stamped ALL STAINLESS STEEL WEST GERMANY. The crystal needs to be replaced. While I normally show movement pics of the watches that I put up for sale the case back on this one is torqued to what feels like factory specs and is on too tight for me to remove. Based on another identical reference that I’ve had I believe the movement is likely a 17 jewels PUW 1564 automatic with quickset date function. By winding the sharply threaded non-screwdown crown and then gently shaking and or spinning the watch face down on a soft, flat surface the seconds hand will move inconsistently and for only several seconds at a time. And since the crown won’t fully pull out the day, date and time cannot be set. Nor can the crown be pushed in to test the quickset date function. Given these issues and considering the movement’s unknown service history a complete overhaul is required. This watch measures approximately 38 mm excluding the crown, approximately 41 mm including the crown and approximately 19 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel, is approximately 9 mm. Including the crystal thickness measures approximately 10.5 mm. Given that the day, date and time cannot be set, that the movement does not stay running for more than a few seconds at a time and considering that it has likely never been serviced a complete overhaul is required. As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old-school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time. For this watch that time is now. FOR REPAIR – while the day and date wheels roll over as they should, the seconds hand will move occasionally when setting the time and the crown can be wound without issue, the movement does not run. Considering that it’s likely that the movement has never been serviced a complete overhaul is required. This Helbros diver has a blue satin “GERMANY” signed dial that has aged naturally and uniquely. The way the dial has aged is not the result of water damage but rather due to a defect in the paint. I’ve had a number of Tudor’s that have aged in a similar fashion. In my humble opinion I think the dial is awesome and looks much better in person than in the pictures. The original lume on the dial and hands, which remains fully intact and emits a short-lived glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged beautifully. The bezel, which rotates smoothly bidirectionally, shows wear. The all stainless steel case with lugholes is in wonderful condition showing minor wear, no visibly noticeable dents or dings and no signs of oxidation. The outside of the case back is stamped “ALL STAINLESS STEEL WEST GERMANY” while the inside of the case back is stamped HELBROS WATCHES. The crystal shows light scratching. The 17 jewels unadjusted “GERMANY” and “HELBROS WATCHES” stamped PUW 1564 automatic movement with quickset date function appears to be in untouched condition. The quickset date function works flawlessly by pressing in on the crown. Given that the movement does not run and considering that it likely has never been serviced (there are no visible watchmaker service markings on the inside of the case back or on the movement), a complete overhaul is required.
