Helical Hairspring Detent Chronometer Pocket Watch Movement, For Repair (P108). Please see photographs for condition – the pictures form an important part of the description. Movement measures 45.85mm on the dial and 43.6mm on the reverse approx. The movement is not fully working. Its appearance is rather odd to me, it looks like it could be possibly unfinished? The plate looks like it hasn’t been fully finished. There are some missing pieces – the detent spring, the center wheel jewel and part of the winding mechanism. Winding the movement does nothing as the winding gears to not marry up to the going barrel due to the missing gear. Mainspring is fine but when wound using a key, it just springs back and does not stay wound. The balance staff has good pivots but the balance itself is bent, when you rotate the wheel by hand it is angled as it rotates back and forth. The balance is stiff because of this reason. Unusual Detent Chronometer Pocket Watch Movement by Tupman for Repair (K39). Please see photographs for condition and size. Firstly, I do not profess to be an expert on such complications! So I will do my best! The movement is not working, there are two issues I can see at least: the chain is broken and has gone under the barrel and the roller jewel on the balance wheel is also missing. The balance swings freely and very well, but because the roller jewel is missing, nothing is happening in the escapement. This escapement seems unusual, the detent is mounted on a separate piece that is floating in a way that would suggest it is not attached to the movement plate. The hairspring is also mounted to a piece attached to the plate in an unusual way and moves like suspension when the balance swings. One can only assume these unusual features were to improve time keeping accuracy and prevent issues from occuring should the watch be knocked or flailed about in a number of different positions in quick succession. Recommended that an expert restores this or it goes to a collector of fine pieces who really knows what they are doing in terms of restoration! Seems in very good cosmetic condition given its age, shame about the issues with it. Has been stored away in a collection for a very long time.
